wave/form

wave/form is a reel-to-reel audiotape loop whose physical apparatus is incorporated within a space, utilizing various architectural elements as both cohorts and manipulators in the re-production of sound. The core process behind the work holds a primary interest in revealing the dependency between the immaterial and the material, in other words the necessity of a recording’s reliance on apparatus and the subsequent impossibility of pure preservation.
The sound loop uses two tape recorders, one recording and one playing back, so that the sound being fed into the machines is continuously recording over and replacing itself. Nothing lasts, not even the physical audiotape itself, which is wrapped around a circular, brick wall. As the tape moves around the circular wall, it becomes increasingly scratched which distorts and destroys the audio and tape.
